An ex-military officer who diverted to the criminal world after resigning from service back in 2013 and led a notorious gang arrested in Visayas, Philippines.
The robbery-hold up gang leader was nabbed on Monday afternoon in a joint operation carried out by the police and the military forces in Barangay Aganan, Iloilo. Dexter Balane, former Philippines Army officer, was detained by the security forces at his rented house in Unka 1 village, Pavia town, Western Visayas on the basis of an arrest warrant issued against him.
“The suspect is the chief of the robbery-holdup gang,” stated Banjamin Magalong, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
Balane has led four robberies carried out by the fearsome Martilyo gang, a group of criminals who are known to rob the jewellery shops by smashing the display cases with the help of a hammer.
Last February, the criminal looted a jewellery shop at the Gaisano Mall in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Norte and blamed for another robbery in a company in Bacolod city in 2012.
According to the high-ranked officials, Balane used his military background in planning and carrying out the courageous daylight robberies.
The criminal band actively involved in carrying out the daring daylight robberies in parts of Manila as well as operated in areas of Visayas and Mindanao. In the past many high profile lawbreaker groups arrested had a member with a military or police background, reported by the local media.
The interesting fact in this case is not yet known, whether they used to bring a hammer with them or they buy it from one of the shops in the mall. Currently the culprit is held in a CIDG detention facility in Western Visayas. IMAGE/rappler.com
