After fireman’s death squatter colony raided–At Kota Kinabalu, the demolition team raided the Sandakan squatter colony near Taman Kenari about 15km from town.
- 20 structures were demolished where illegal electrical connections causes fireman’s death.
- Enforcement personnel from three departments, Immigration, National Registration and Labor were also involved in the operation.
Illegal migrants living in a squatter colony were currently detained for further action by the Immigration department. According to District police chief ACP Zabidi Mohd Zain, the undocumented foreigners were nabbed in a 4 am integrated operation by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom), Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS).
The Fireman Apolos Jeremos while battling a bushfire near the squatter colony died after he had stepped on a live wire from an illegal connection of the squatters.
Api Api Assemblywoman Christina Liew hopes the Government is not waiting for more lives to be lost before permanently solving the rampant illegal power theft problem in squatter areas.
According to Liew, “In 2011, a policeman was electrocuted in Tawau at a location where electricity was illegally tapped from a power line. And on Monday, a fireman also lost his life to power thieves.
“A young life was snuffed out, a young woman has lost a husband and an unborn child is without a father. Are we going to wait for more loss of lives to power thefts? Where is the Government’s pledge of ‘People First, Performance Now’? Or do we need a Barisan Nasional (BN) YB to suffer the same fate next before the Government acts on the perennial problem?” she added.
DAP Sabah Secretary Dr Edwin Bosi said the Government cannot hide and pretend nothing happened following the electrocution death. Squatter colony IMAGE/m.thestar.com.my
