UPDATE: Two-day old infant murdered in China, police in Shanghai have detained two people – who are believed to be involved in murdering an infant with cleft lip.
- Those apprehended by authorities are a doctor and the baby’s grandfather. The detainees accused of injecting the baby with toxic and harmful chemicals.
Two-day old baby was discovered dead by the staff at the No. 2 People’s Hospital in Chongming County last Friday, according Chinese media reports.
Initial investigations conducted by the law enforcement agencies proved that the toddler’s grandfather obtained a chemical potassium chloride (KCl) from an obstetrician and injected the compound into the baby’s head.
Potassium Chloride is the treatment of choice for the patients with hypokalemia – who are deficient in potassium. If the drug infused incorrectly, it can cause hyperkalemia that can lead to cardiac arrest resulting in death of the person.
Cleft lip and cleft palate belong to a group of orofacial congenital defects and correctable by surgery.Cleft lip contains an opening in the upper lip, mostly in the middle that may extend into the nasal cavity.
Cleft palate is a split in the roof of the mouth extending into the nose and this condition is more severe in nature. It can result in feeding problems, speech problems, hearing problems and frequent ear infections.
Beam International, a charity group organizes free surgery for the condition, informed the reporters that one in 600 infants birthed in China every year have a cleft lip or palate.
In China, the cost of surgery for cleft lip is between 5,000 and 7000 Yuan, and for cleft palate up to 10,000 Yuan, said Shan Li, director of the charity organization.
There have been many cases reported where families abandon such babies. Two months ago, a baby with a cleft palate was found alive in Guangxi region, 10 days after being discarded by the family members. IMAGE/getty
