Nationwide deworming by Department of Health creates panic, after thousands of students admitted in hospital allegedly took expired tablet.
Department of Health together with the Department of Education conducted a nationwide deworming in all public school, July 29, Wednesday. Participants from kindergarten to Grade 6 students, aims to remove parasitic infection.
Thousands of students were rushed to hospitals in Dipolog City. Parents believed that the deworming pill took by students in Zamboanga del Norte were expired. Showing expiration date on the top of the package is Dec 2012. After taking the pill, student experienced vomiting, dizziness and stomach ache.
In statement of DOH Region 9 Director Dr. Nimfa Torrizo upon the incident, saying, the department is looking into the possibility that children might have experienced a negative reaction to the drugs after taking the drugs on an empty stomach.
Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Wilter Palma said “There was lack of information dissemination on the part of DOH particularly on how to deal with various reactions to the medicine.”
Deworming of a child carried out by swallowing a pill. Gradual increase of the worm population in the intestines, begin shortly after the pill has killed the intestinal worm, if no change in the hygiene situation of the child is made. Supplemented with washing hands daily with soap, brushing teeth daily , core of this national program.
According to DOH, “The highest intensity of infection has been documented among children aged 1 to 12 years old. Pre-school children aged 1 to 4 suffer the greatest morbidity while school-aged children, or those aged 5 to 12, harbor the greatest load of infection” .“Therefore, mass deworming is being utilized by the government as one of the major strategies to reduce the burden of helminth infections among children aged 1 to 12 years old.”
World Health Organization stated, over 870 million children are at risk of parasitic worm infection, infections interfere with nutrient uptake; can lead to anemia, malnourishment and impaired mental and physical development; and pose a serious threat to children’s health, education, and productivity. Infected children are often too sick or tired to concentrate at school, or to attend at all.
