Manila is known for typhoons every year, creating constant flooding and is recorded being prone to earthquakes. In order for Manila to be fully prepared and at the same time to prevent losing of love one’s, an earthquake drill has been conducted, today.
Marikina Valley Fault System warned Manila and the surrounding regions for a possible earthquake as it ranked as the second riskiest capital, based on survey. The capital bridging Pacific typhoon belt and intersects several fault lines.
In the statement of Dr Renato Solidum, heads the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said that today, July 30, West Valley Fault, which cuts across the capital of more than 12 million people and outlying provinces, could shift anytime based on its seismic history.
In the year 1645, Manila endured several deadly earthquakes and in 1677 a great earthquake hits which destroyed the stone and brick medieval city.
The 2004 Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study, stated that a 7.2-magnitude quake in Metro Manila could cause 33,500 deaths and 114,000 injuries from the tremor itself and additional 18,000 deaths from the fire that could break out.
As Manila experienced succeeding earthquakes, 18th and 19th centuries, drill has been made to prepare the city for any possible damage. As of now, modern buildings in and around Manila are designed to overcome a high magnitude quake. This is accordance to the country’s building code.
Knowing for a possible damage around the city, as well as possible killing of many lives due to high magnitude earthquake, earthquake drill is a great help for people to be aware of the risk of earthquakes.
