2013 bomb attack – A key suspect killed in a clash with security forces in Ruesco district, Narathiwat.
The encounter happened at a house located in Padae Taerae village of Ruesco district about 5am on Sunday. The gunfight between the insurgent and the security forces continued for about 30 minutes. After the crossfire stopped, troops moved in to clear the area and they found a dead body identified as Masukarueno Yakumo along with a pistol and a hand grenade next to his body.
The suspect was linked in a bomb explosion that killed former police chief at Ruesco station and two other officers on March 15, 2013. A remote-controlled bomb buried in the ground was detonated as their vehicle passed.
Shortly after the incident, district chief Yaya Panakho and Ruesco police chief met the residents and explained the situation. The authorities tried their best to avoid use of weapons but were forced to act in that manner.
According to a spokesman, nine warrants were issued against the suspect during 2005-2012 in connection with terrorist activities in the deep south. The latest warrant was issued on Oct 25, 2012 when he was accused of executing an attack on an operation base in Ruesco district.
In another violent attack, two brothers were shot dead by armed men in Nong Chik district of Pattani province on Sunday evening. Two of the injured, a monk and a soldier, were pronounced dead hours after they were brought to the hospital. Few days after the blast, third victim Phra Payom Suktri died from his injuries.
