Adult websites blocked – India has banned more than 800 adult websites on grounds of morality and decency.
Over the weekend Internet users across India discovered that they can’t access the pornographic pages while they were trying to access some websites, following a request from Indian Government.
Government ordered the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to nearly 850 sites including adult websites, dating pages and pornographic blogs. The officials described the order as a way to protect the children from accessing them.
A spokesperson for India’s telecom department said that the government was trying to control easy access to pornography following an official order from the Supreme Court. Web users may still be able to access the sites using virtual private networks (VPNs) and proxy servers. Telecom operators have said that they will not be able to implement the ban immediately because they have to block each site one by one and it will take a few days to bar access to all the sites.
In July, the Supreme Court expressed its unhappiness over the government’s inability to block the vulgar contents online, especially that featuring child pornography.
Previously in 2009, Indian government tried to turn off an erotic cartoon character. Despite the ban order, the cartoon was available on the web through multiple hosts and torrents. In the past country also tried to control social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
According to statistics by adult site Pornhub, India was ranked fourth largest source of traffic in 2014, after the US, UK and Canada. The move has caused a mix reaction on Indian social media networks, with many users have condemned the ban. Hundreds of users tweeted on the subject using the hashtag #pornban. IMAGE/bgr.in
