One of complainant against Veloso’s recruiter Ma. Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao decided to withdraw charges.
Ana Maria Gonzales, one of the complainant who filed charges against recruiter Ma. Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao. Gonzales allegedly a victim of the two recruiter appear on Public Attorney’s Office to formally withdraw her charges.
Recruiter Sergio and Lacanilao were the reasons why Mary Jane Veloso put on jail. Veloso was arrested and sentenced to death for smuggling heroin in Indonesia. She is a Filipina woman, married at age of 17 and separated. She have two sons, a 6 year-old and the other one is 12 year-old.
After the withdrawal of case against Sergio and Lacanilao, humor then came up that the case was just a way to help and to stop Veloso’s execution. This step shows to Indonesian government that Philippine government has done something to help Veloso.
In the statement of Howard Areza ,lawyer from Public Attorney’s Office or PAO , saying, if the court grants Gonzales’ withdrawal from the case, the charges against his clients will be lessen to simple illegal recruitment, which is a bailable offense.
Arenza is the lawyer who represents Sergio and Lacanilao. She proved that Gonzales went to PAO to withdraw her complaint-affidavit. This formed the basis for indicting recuiters Sergio and Lacanilao for the non-bailable offense of large-scale illegal recruitment, Tuesday.
Attorney Areza also stated that, “She [Gonzales] claimed that when she signed the affidavit, she had no knowledge that charges would be filed against Sergio and Lacanilao. Yesterday, she told us she is no longer interested in pursuing the case.”
Complainant Ana Maria Gonzales claimed she was tricked upon filing the case, way to help the case filed against Mary Jane Veloso, preventing her from the punishment who was sentenced to death in October 2010. However it was able to stop due to suspension of punishment enacted by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesian President.
Mary Jane Veloso put on jail when her godsister convinced her to go to Indonesia carrying suitcase, she then claimed she was fooled. She was arrested in April 2010 for smuggling heroin found in her suitcase in Indonesia. Her case caught every one’s attention toward’s country’s capital punishment.
