Audi Cup – Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in the final at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
The hosts Bayern Munich overcame the Spanish side Real Madrid in the entertaining decider of the pre-season tournament Audi Cup. Pep Guardiola’s men started the match with their trademark “attacking football” and created the better chances of scoring goals but missed out marginally.
The breakthrough for Bundesliga champions came in the dying moments of the match when striker Robert Lewandowski scored a goal off Douglas Costa’s free kick. The Poland international Lewandowski missed a sitter midway through the second half when he failed to put the ball past the goalkeeper.
There were very few goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match but Bayern’s best chance came in the second minute when Thomas Muller’s low shot went wide of the goal post. Other than that, both the teams struggled to create primary scoring chances during the first half of the match.
At Audi Cup, Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas had a good outing in the Real goal and saved first period efforts from David Alaba and Mario Gotze, who was brilliantly set up by Costa. Real trio Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo (widely known as BBC) did not play and the La Liga side lacked authority and attacking flair against their German opponents.
Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos got a couple of chances to put his team ahead but he was denied by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
In another encounter, English side Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Italian club AC Milan 2-0 to finish third. Naser Chadli stunner and Tom Carroll’s strike helped the Spurs to finish off the tournament with a victory.
