Turkey defeated Netherlands 3-0 in a qualifying match of Euro 2016 on Sunday at Konya arena, central Anatolia region of Turkey.
The Netherlands’ hopes of making the Euro 2016 finals hung by a thread after they were downed by well-organized opponent. As a result, Turkey moved up to the third place in the Group A of the qualifying round, behind Iceland and Czech Republic.
Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup gave Turkey the dream start in the eighth minute, causing wild excitement among the crowd including Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu who hails from the central region. Ozyakup connected a remarkable pass from Arda Turan and slotted the ball neatly past goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.
Twenty minutes later, Turkish captain Arda Turan doubled the lead by stealing the ball from Daley Blind before firing past the Dutch goalkeeper. At the interval, the home side went into the dressing room with a solid two-goal lead. The Dutch came back fired up into the second half as they created some goal scoring chances but all their efforts went in vain.
Burak Yilmaz added a third late on to steal a result that means the Dutch can only finish third in Group A. However, to achieve that the last year’s World Cup semi-finalists must now rely on Turkey dropping points in their last two games. The visitors enjoyed much more possession of the ball as compared to their opponents 38 percent.
In Group A, Iceland confirmed their place at an international tournament for the first time when they secured the point they needed against Kazakhstan. The Czech Republic also qualified automatically after beating Latvia 2-1.
The team finishing behind the top two will be guaranteed a place in a two-legged play-off against another of the third placed sides. That is the only path open to the Oranje, but their fate of playing the finals in France is now out of their hands. IMAGE/AFP
