Veteran lawmaker taken to the hospital, diagnosed suffering from dengue.
Senator Juan Ponce Enrile hospitalized at Makati Medical Center, 16 September, Wednesday morning. The 91 year-old, veteran lawmaker suffered dengue fever and currently given proper treatment, however still under observation. Recently, the Senator placed under hospital arrest but allowed to post bail last month. He was charged plunder and graft in connection with the P10 billion pork barrel scam.
In a text message of his daughter Katrina saying, “He no longer has fever but his platelet count had gone down. The doctors are monitoring and taking care of him now.” While one of his legal counsels Atty. Joseph Sagandoy confirmed, “I was in informed that he was diagnosed to be suffering from dengue fever.”
While sitting as the Senate President, Enrile was accused of using Senate funds called MOOE, a Christmas gifts to members of the senate who do not oppose him. Pia Cayetano, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Trillanes were not included, reportedly to have been only given PhP 250 thousand each. Juan Ponce Enrile attempted to vacate his position in 21 January 2013 as Senate President, however, his motion was rejected.
He allegedly gave PhP 1.6 million each to his fellow Senators, Santiago exposed in January 2013. Later on, Juan Ponce Enrile admitted accusations saying, amount was part of the balance of the maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE) funds allowed per senator. Because of such allegations, Enrile stepped down as Senate President after his privilege speech on June 5, 2013.
Juan Ponce Enrile again involved in misappropriated funds in September 2013 in connection with PDAF or what is commonly called Pork Barrel fund, allocations to fake non government organizations.
