Barcelona suffered their first La Liga defeat as Celta Vigo won against the champions 4-1 on Wednesday.
The Catalan club failed to maintain 100 percent start to the season as they faced their biggest defeat under Luis Enrique. The loss at Balaidos exposed the defensive flaws in the Barcelona dugout.
The away side created numerous chances in an open encounter but poor defending proved their undoing as the champions were caught on the break. Before the game, Barcelona had lost only one of their previous 25 matches in the domestic league.
Eduardo Berizzo’s side produced a great team display and they set the tone early on, pushing Barca back in the opening minutes. Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas scored twice in Celta Vigo’s comprehensive victory over the Champions League winners.
Nolito opened the scoring with a brilliant strike against his former club in the 26th minute. Celta maintained the pressure and doubled their lead four minutes later with a goal from Aspas. The pressure mounted on Barcelona after being two down and Andres Iniesta set up Neymar with a fine through-ball but the Brazilian’s effort was blocked.
Early in the second half, Aspas could have added another but he drove his shot across the goal. At this point, the away side showed signs of a thrilling comeback as Iniesta got into the box from the left but Messi cracked the shot against the post. Center-back Gerard Pique headed over from a free-kick and Messi saw his shot saved by the goalie.
Aspas struck for the second time just ten minutes into the second period. The Spaniard brilliantly flicked the ball over Dani Alves and broke away before curling a shot beyond goalkeeper Ander Ter Stegen. Barcelona fought hard to avoid the embarrassing score sheet as they kept attacking but they missed out on each occasion.
Neymar pulled one back for Barca with 10 minutes remaining. But it was too late, former Stoke striker John Guidetti netted a fourth for the home side to ensure a comfortable win. IMAGE/ Alex Caparros/ Getty Images
