Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to pass the 500 goal mark as Real Madrid beat Malmo at Eric Perssons in the Champions League.
With six points from their opening two games, Real Madrid lead Group A on goal difference from their next opponents Paris Saint-Germain. Last week, Rafael Benitez’s men thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 as Ronaldo hit a treble in their championship opener.
The visitors were in complete control of the game as they had nearly 70 percent possession and 21 total attempts as compared to their opponents’ just 5 total attempts. Real Madrid manager Benitez hailed Ronaldo’s milestone and highlighted the speed at which his superstar reached the club record goals.
Ronaldo achieved the milestone in the 29th minute when he latched onto fire a fine pass from Isco. The Portugal international failed to make an impact against Granada, Athletic Bilbao and Malaga in recent weeks.
Former Manchester United forward doubled his tally when he diverted home Lucas Vazquez’s cross in the final minutes of the match. With the second goal, the Portuguese captain equaled Raul’s all-time record of 323 goals for the club.
“I’m very happy. Thank you to all my teammates for helping me reach these figures and break the record at the greatest club in the world – it’s an honour” said Ronaldo after the game.
Ronaldo, who joined the club in July 2009 for a record fee of 80 million pounds, has netted his 323 goals from just 308 matches. He also scored 118 goals for Manchester United, 55 for Portugal and five for Sporting CP.
