A bus plunged into a ravine in a mountainous region south of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta Wednesday killing 18 people and injuring 43 others .
A spokesman for the national disaster agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said the accident occurred Wednesday morning in Puncak, West Java.
The bus was returning from a retreat with the passengers members of various churches in Jakarta.
Puncak is a cool, mountainous region that is a popular holiday destination for residents of the Indonesian capital.
According to Nugroho, the brakes on the bus stopped working and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The bus collided into a parked truck and then fell into the ravine.
Those injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Road accidents occur frequently in the region, as Indonesia has low standards of road safety in many parts of the country. Image/Google Images
