Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals before Real Madrid saw a remarkable late fightback from Shakhtar Donetsk at Lviv in the Champions League.
Rafael Benitez’s men went 4-0 up after 70 minutes and appeared to have taken the game away from the opponents. However, the hosts staged a dramatic comeback as they managed to reduce the deficit to just one goal. Real Madrid ensured a top spot in Group A with this win but had to saw off a stunning comeback from the Ukrainian club.
Real Madrid looked determined to put behind Saturday’s humiliating defeat at the hands of Barcelona. The Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo headed home from an acute angle in the 18th minute of the contest. Rafael Benitez was forced to make an early change when Raphael Varane was substituted due to a hamstring injury.
Early in the second half, the home side doubled their lead asLuka Modric slammed home from 10 yards off a pass from Ronaldo. Less than two minutes later, former Manchester United striker Ronaldo was involved in setting up another goal, passing to the right-back Dani Carvajal who dodged his marker before curling a sweet strike over Shakhtar’s keeper Andriy Pyatov.
Ronaldo tapped home a rebound 20 minutes from time for his second goal of the evening. Real Madrid were certain of their comprehensive victory as the visitors failed to pose a threat for the La Liga giants. However, Rafael Benitez’s men were seen worried after Shakhtar Donetsk managed to score three goals in 11 minutes.
Alex Teixeira scored off a penalty kick in the 77th minute and moments later Dentinho netted Shakhtar’s second goal. Teixeira pulled off another goal in the dying moments of the match and reduced the deficit to 4-3 but the visitors failed to bring an equalizer.
