A 2010 poll showed 41% of Americans believed Jesus Christ would return to earth within the next 40 years. Numerous other polls taken over the past several decades found similar results. So are we really living in the “End Times”, as these conservative Christians claim?
The fact of the matter is, this is nothing new. All throughout the past 2,000 years of history there have always been Christians who claimed the Second Coming of Jesus was about to occur. There are quite a few verses in the Bible that predicted the Second Coming was about to happen way back then. There are even several passages in the New Testament that have Jesus telling his followers that it would happen in their lifetime! Consider these verses:
Matthew 16:27-28 (Jesus speaking to his disciples):
“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”
Luke 9:26-27 (Jesus speaking to his disciples)
“For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.”
So if today’s literalist Christians are right, and the “Second Coming” refers to a literal coming of Jesus to the earth, who among his disciples who heard these words 2,000 years ago is still alive? If no one, then Jesus was clearly wrong. And so is the Bible.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave when we insist on biblical literalism and inerrancy. So you see, Christians howling about how we’re living in the “Last Days” is nothing new. This kind of foolishness has been going on for 2,000 years. But the fact that they were wrong back then, and have been wrong all throughout history, doesn’t stop them from continuing to cling to such notions. Image/Google Images
