Hong Kong — A Hong Kong court has sentenced a couple to prison terms for repeated acts of torture against their Indonesian maid, a BBC report says.
Testimony described beatings, burnings with a hot iron, and other forms of abuse.
The maid, Kartika Puspitasari, testified that she had been repeatedly abused and humiliated during her two years of employment with the couple.
She told the court she had been beaten with a bicycle chain and a clothes hanger, as well as attacked with a paper cutter.
She finally escaped the couple’s home and sought refuge in the Indonesian consulate.
The judge said the attacks were repeated and continual. But he rejected testimony that the maid had been tied to a chair for five days while the couple was in Thailand on holiday.
He said Hong Kong’s reputation as a safe destination for migrant workers could be damaged by the case.
The husband, Tai Chi-wai, received a three year and three month prison sentence for assault and wounding. His wife, Catherine Au, received five and a half years for repeated attacks.
Activists have protested against a Hong Kong requirement that domestic workers live at the homes of their employers, saying it makes them vulnerable to abuse. Image/Reuters
