Weather Radar 2013 updates pictures and Video: A record breaking blizzard dropped three to four feet of snow following two inches of rain has devastated South Dakota.
Killed at least 10,000 to 20,000 cows due to the cold and snow. South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard and U.S. Sen. John Thune did an aerial assessment of the blizzard damage and livestock losses. State officials said estimate of dead livestock will likely rise.
The number of animals is hard to confirm. In part, because the federal agency tasked with tallying livestock losses after a disaster is closed during the partial government shutdown.
Weather Radar “The number of dead cattle will likely rise as more losses are documented. Last week’s rain added moisture to pastures already saturated by the quickly melting snow, making it difficult for ranchers to traverse the vast terrain to assess losses and tend to stressed but surviving animals, said Silvia Christen, executive director of the Stockgrowers Association.” csmonitor.com reported.
Electric power blackout: More than 22,000 homes and businesses in western South Dakota remained without power into this week, according to utility companies.
