Asteroid Apophis in 2029 and 2013 TV135 could hit Earth in 2032, facts: A video graphic of asteroid approaching earth, CNN’s Tom Foreman looks at what would be involved in capturing an asteroid. Large Asteroid could hit earth in 2032, but poses little threat, NASA officials say.
Ukrainian astronomers discovered 2013 TV135 just 10 days ago, after the asteroid had its close encounter with Earth on Sept 16 and is due for a return visit on Aug. 26, 2032, at which point it could collide with Earth.
The probability of the asteroid hitting Earth is only one in 63,000, they calculated. Earth has faced tougher odds: At one point, astronomers gave the asteroid Apophis a 1-in-40 chance of hitting Earth in 2029 according to NBCnews.com report.
“To put it another way, that puts the current probability of no impact in 2032 at about 99.998 percent,” said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
