A phone based online kidnapping scam targeted US immigrants for ransom money, no one was abducted, it’s where the “Virtual kidnapping” label comes from.
Washington, D.C. is the usual target area because it is home to large numbers of Central American immigrants whose migrant relatives are often out of contact during the long journey north according to AP report.
The “virtual kidnappers” collected at least $500,000, according to federal investigators. Recently, four people have been charged in a scheme that used telemarketing tactics to shake down immigrants for ransom money.
Authorities have also confirmed that while these “telemarketers” attempt to reach immigrants, random numbers for money are dialed, so there is no certainty as to who will be called.
