Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery statistics in U.K: A new rate increase of women undergoing genital cosmetic surgery, according to The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) and the British Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (BritSPAG) report.
The 5-fold rise in labiaplasty procedures in the NHS, totaling 2000 in 2010, are largely for cosmetic reasons and are not the result of a rise in labial disease but driven by online porn.
According to Dame Suzi Leather, DBE, chair of the RCOG’s Ethics Committee that authored the RCOG report. She said adolescent girls have a distorted understanding of what normal female genitalia should look like. “Doctors are faced with adolescents who feel somehow that they need surgery to be normal,”
Over the past five years more than 250 such procedures were performed on girls under the age of 14, NHS figures show.
As a result, the committee recommends that genital cosmetic surgery not be carried out on girls under the age of 18, until their external genitalia are fully formed, reportedly. AFP/AFP/File – British gynaecologists say increasing numbers of teenage girls and women are undergoing genital cosmetic surgery, driven in part by unrealistic images of how they should look based on pornography.
