Singapore — Singapore turns on its Christmas lights tonight in safer colors on Orchard Road, avoiding the traditional red, green and gold because of their similarity to traffic lights.
Instead, Orchard Road will be turned into a winter wonderland with giant diamonds and snowflakes, all blue and white.
The Orchard Road Business Association (Orba), which organizes the annual display, decided to change the colors for this year’s light-up so motorists would not confuse the decorations with traffic signals.
“While we want to create the festive mood, we have to ensure that motorists will not be distracted by the displays,” Orba’s executive director Steven Goh told The Straits Times. He said they had initially planned to use silver and gold this year, but decided to change it due to gold being similar to the amber color of traffic signals.
This year’s decorations, themed Christmas on A Great Street, will be turned on tonight and continue through January 5.
