Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar declared a change of the Malaysian state’s weekend holidays to Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday beginning January 1, 2014.
The Sultan announced the decision during the investiture ceremony on Saturday held in conjunction with his 55th birthday.
He said the decision to make Friday and Saturday the weekend days of rest was made after receiving feedback from various sectors of society, and to allow Muslims to perform their religious obligations on Friday in a more peaceful manner, according to reports.
The change has been speculated since a government document was leaked on the Internet.
Several other Malaysian states have Friday and Saturdays as their off days, including Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.
Prior to 1994, Friday and Saturday were non-working days in Johor.
