Bangkok — Rumors circulating in Thailand since Saturday that Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda had been severely ill and had died, but that his death was being covered up, are not true, said close aide Pisanu Phuthawong on Wednesday.
Lt Gen Pisanu released a photo to the media he said was taken on Monday evening that shows Gen Prem exercising on his front lawn in his Bangkok residence to prove the rumors false.
The Privy Council president and former prime minister had an operation to treat an inflamed lung and was released from the hospital in September to recover at home. The photo is the first released showing him in a healthy condition.
Gen Prem was monitoring the current political crisis closely but chose to remain silent, not expressing any opinion, said Lt Gen Pisanu, adding that the Privy Council president wanted to see the country in peace and order, said a Bangkok Post report.
According to Lt Gen Pisanu, Gen Prem was surprised about the death rumors but did not complain about it. He did, however, tell his aide to correct the false rumors.
