Bangkok — (UPDATE) One person has been confirmed dead as shots rang out near the red-shirt rally site at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Saturday night.
Police said one person was killed and five injured.
Earlier reports indicated three people were taken to a hospital, two students from nearby Ramkhamhaeng University and a 29-year-old Cambodian worker who had been hit by a stray bullet.
It was unclear who fired the shots.
A reporter with the Bangkok Post said he heard gunshots and what sounded like an explosion near the university about 8pm.
Earlier in the day, violence erupted as dozens of anti-government students from the university attacked a bus and taxi carrying red-shirt pro-government supporters. No injuries were reported in those incidents.
Thousands of red-shirts flocked into the city on Saturday in support of the Pheu Thai-led government as anti-government protests continued to escalate in Bangkok.
Fears of violent confrontations between the groups is high.
