Singapore — The 30th man in an online vice ring case has been convicted in Singapore for having commercial sex with an underage escort worker.
The suspect, 38-year-old Arjunan Kulasegaram, received a jail sentence of 10 weeks on Wednesday.
Mr. Kulasegaram, a motorsports boss, had pleaded guilty this past July to the charge of paying $450 for the sexual services of the 17-year-old minor at Pan Pacific Orchard in Claymore Road on October 10, 2010.
He became the 30th suspect to be sentenced thus far in an ongoing vice ring case that involves 51 men who were charged last year with having commercial sex with the Singaporean minor.
The girl was one of the escorts working for pimp Tang Boon Thiew at the time. She reportedly provided oral sex for Mr. Kulasegaram, according to a Straits Times report.
Of the 30 suspects convicted in the case, the longest sentence to be given so far is five months jail, which was given to Emlyn Thomas Thariyan, a 38-year-old Armed Forces Lieutenant Colonel. He was convicted last month of paying the 17-year-old prostitute $500 for sexual services in February 2011.
Prostitution in Singapore is legal, but several prostitution-related activities are not. These include public solicitation, living on the earnings of a prostitute, and maintaining a brothel.
It is also a criminal offence in Singapore to obtain the sexual services of a minor – a person under 18 years of age.
