Here are some of the highlights of the SEA Games 2013 results for the Sunday Dec 15 competition: Thailand increased its lead in the medal tally Sunday. As of 7:30pm Sunday night, Thailand had won 45 gold medals, compared to second-place Myanmar with 38. Vietnam was third with 36, and Indonesia fourth with 32, followed by Malaysia with 24 and Singapore with 16.
Thailand also leads all countries in total medals, having won 126 gold, silver and bronze. Indonesia, though in 4th place in golds, actually has more total medals than the two countries ahead of them, with a total of 123. Third-place Vietnam has 109 total medals, and 2nd-place Myanmar has 104.
In men’s football on Sunday, traditional rivals Singapore and Malaysia played to a 1-1 draw after the Malaysians scored at the very end of the match. Singapore, however, qualified for the semi-finals with the draw. Malaysia is still alive in their fight to make the semi-finals.
In the second match, Vietnam defeated Laos 5-0, setting up a decisive match with Malaysia on Tuesday that will determine which team makes the semis. At the moment, Malaysia has 7 points and Vietnam 6 points, so the Vietnamese need a win and the Malaysians need either a win or a draw on Tuesday.
In women’s football, Vietnam defeated Myanmar 1-0 to win Group A with 6 points. Myanmar finished second-place with 3 points.
The Philippines won the gold medal in men’s basketball by beating Malaysia 84-56. Malaysia took an early 8-2 lead before the Filipinos went on a 15-0 run en route to a 21-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Philippines stretched the lead to as many as 14 before settling for a 43-34 halftime lead.
They got the lead up to 20 in the 3rd quarter, and had a 19-point lead heading into the 4th quarter, eventually winning by 28.
