Bangkok — Thai police have arrested a man who allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered a six-year-old girl in Bangkok, after an intense 10-day manhunt in a high-profile case.
The suspect, identified only as Nui age 32, allegedly kidnapped the girl from a Thai country music (look thoong) concert in a suburban area of Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road soi 65. He worked as a labourer for the music band the girl’s father had taken her to see on the night she went missing, said reports.
He is reportedly a convicted child abductor from Khon Kaen in northeast Thailand, who spent three years and eight months in prison for kidnapping a child under 15 years, and was released on August 23 of last year, according to Thai media reports.
He was arrested in Nong Khai, near the Laos border opposite Vientiene, on Sunday afternoon after a witness recognized him and called police.
The suspect was caught on CCTV footage leading the girl away from a nearby 7-11 camera and also on security footage at the BTS (skytrain) Bearing Station.
The girl’s disappearance got the public’s attention when her story and pictures were released on Facebook, including the security camera footage, in order to obtain leads on her and the suspect.
During the concert, the girl had gotten sleepy around 10:20pm, and her father took her to his pickup truck. After staying with her for 10 minutes, and her having fallen asleep, he returned to the concert, which ended at 11pm.
When he returned to the truck, she was gone. The father and friends searched for the girl and notified police.
At 2:30am Sunday Dec 15, a passer-by saw a human skull in a deserted area near Sukhumvit Soi 105 and called the police.
An inspection indicated the skull was likely of a girl between six and eight years old, who had died no more than one week earlier, said a Bangkok Post report.
Police found other evidence, including human bones evidently from the back part of the victim’s body, a cluster of hair, and the green t-shirt she was wearing.
Nui allegedly confessed to drinking a bottle of local lao khao (white liquor) and four cans of beer before the incident. He walked by the concert to buy more beer, and saw the girl alone in the truck.
He asked her to go with him, offering to buy her some candies. He said he led her across the BTS station and found a dark side street where he raped and strangled her, said reports.
He claimed he abandoned her, thinking she had only passed out.
The suspect will be presented to a press conference in Bangkok on Monday where further details will be revealed, said police.
