Naypyitaw, Myanmar — Vietnam defeated Malaysia 4-0 in a semi-finals women’s football match at the SEA Games in Myanmar to book a place in the finals.
The Vietnamese team will play the winner of the other semi-finals game between host Myanmar and defending champion Thailand later Wednesday night.
In the first semi-finals match played at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium in the city of Mandalay, Vietnam scored one goal in the first half, and then increased their pace to score three more in the second half for an impressive win.
It was the first time in 18 years that the Malaysian women’s team had made it to the semi-finals.
Vietnam had dominated the first half, having many opportunities to score, but only managed to get one goal.
The Vietnamese tangent of Thi Minh Nguyet and Nhu Huynh constantly harassed the Malaysian defence during the first half, with Thi Minh finally scoring a goal after several close calls.
But the first half was mostly a story of Vietnam repeatedly missing opportunities to grab a big lead.
Malaysia nearly scored when Norhanisa Yahya’s shot hit the crossbar, bounced off the goalkeeper and rolled out.
Finally, in the 55th minute, Vietnam’s Thi Tuyet Dung scored to put double their lead at 2-0.
Vietnam scored their third goal ten minutes later when Thai Muon Nguyen’s shot hit the crossbar and was then picked up on the rebound by Thi Minh and put it into the net.
Nhu Huynh scored Vietnam’s last goal in the 77th minute to give their team a 4-0 victory and a slot in the finals.
The finals match will be played on Friday, December 20 at 7:30pm, also at Mandalar Thiri Stadium in Mandalay.
