Bangkok’s Siam Paragon luxury mall is the top Instagram place in the world in 2013 to be photographed on the popular photo-sharing app.
Amazingly enough, last year it was another Bangkok attraction that topped Instagram’s list – the city’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The airport was number 9 on this year’s list.
The other locations on the Top 10 list for 2013 are Times Square in New York, Disneyland in California, Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas, Disney World in Florida, Staples Center in Los Angeles, Central Park in New York, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and The High Line in New York.
Bangkok’s Siam Paragon mega hi-so mall was number 2 on last year’s list.
It may seem a bit strange that Bangkok has two locations on an otherwise exclusively U.S. list, but there are reasons for this.
The photo-sharing app Instagram is hugely popular in the Southeast Asian country, says Jon Russell, Asia editor of global technology blog Thenextweb.com.
“Instagram is hugely popular in Thailand where timing — the app’s rise coincided with mass market adoption of smartphones — and its use by Thai celebrities made it a must-have app for locals,” he told CNN.
“Thais are less concerned by the privacy issues of tracking their location, and keen to show friends where they’ve been”.
“Plus Siam Paragon itself is more than just a shopping mall in Western terms. Aside from the many shops, cafes and restaurants — taking a photo of your food/coffee is standard — there’s an aquarium, cinema and more.”
Instagram also released the Top 10 most Instagrammed cities of 2013.
From number one to number ten, those cities are New York, Bangkok, Los Angeles, London, Sao Paulo, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, San Diego, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, according to reports.
An Instagram spokesman said in an email response that the company does not release data on the number of pictures taken at any location.
