Singapore parties with New Year’s Eve countdown, video: The 9th annual Marina Bay Singapore Countdown featured a dazzling eight-minute fireworks display following musical performances and other forms of entertainment to delight the crowd.
One of the highlights was MediaCorp’s party at the Floating Platform, where Taiwanese-American singer Wang Leehom and UK boy-band The Wanted performed, among others.
Wang Leehom, who surprised fans with the announcement of his marriage last month, said backstage that he will be celebrating New Year’s with his fans onstage and with his new wife, Lee Jinglei, by his side. He also said he would be staying on in Singapore for a few days to sing at a friend’s wedding, according to reports.
When the British-Irish boy band The Wanted strolled out on the red carpet at MediaCorp’s Celebrate TV50 countdown show, the fans went wild.
The band’s Siva Kaneswaran and Tom Parker shook the hands of fans as they walked down the carpet. Nathan Sykes and Jay McGuiness were spotted hugging some of the luckier fans waiting on the sides, said reports.
Local and international artists also entertained the crowds at the Promontory @ Marina Bay from 6pm.
The Marina Bay Singapore Countdown theme this year was “Beautiful Life”, and the music accompanying the eight-minute fireworks display was the work of local director Iskandar Ismail, which was also played at the 2011 event.
Another countdown party took place at the 11th annual Boon Lay town, with some 20,000 revellers reportedly in attendance.
Bright gold, red, and blue fireworks streaked across the sky for 90 seconds as the crowd cheered its way into 2014.
Six robot dinosaurs which measured up to 2.2 metres in height made their first appearance at the event.
Parents reportedly applauded the dinosaurs, saying they made the children really happy, The Straits Times reported.
Those in attendance included children, adults, the elderly, the disabled, and foreign workers.
