NFL Playoff predictions 2014: San Francisco vs Seattle — This is a classic matchup in the NFC Championship game, between the division rivals who are also the two best teams in the conference.
The teams split their two regular-season meetings both this year and last, with the 49ers winning two close games in San Francisco, but Seahawks dominating them in Seattle. The scores in the games played in Seattle were 29-3 this season, and 42-13 last year. So based on recent history, the teams appeared to be evenly matched when they played in San Francisco, but Seattle was just too much for the 49ers to handle when they met in Seattle, where the Seahawks have the league’s biggest home-field advantage with a crowd that gets extremely loud.
However, many people believe the 49ers are the NFL’s best team at the moment. Both of these teams have great defences, probably the two best in the league, but the San Francisco offence has been playing better than Seattle’s of late. The Seahawk passing game really struggled against New Orleans last Saturday after wide-receiver Percy Harvin left the game with an injury.
So what we have here is a 49er team that would likely be favored if this game were in San Francisco. But Seattle is the toughest place to play in the league, and the Seahawks have shown they can dominate the 49ers at home.
Look for a ferocious defensive battle. Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch had a huge game against the Saints, and if Percy Harvin plays it gives the Seattle offence a big boost and makes this an easier pick. But if Harvin doesn’t play, can Russell Wilson get any kind of a passing game going against the 49ers? I have to believe he will perform better than he did in the New Orleans game.
Seattle is just too hard to beat at home, and the place will be absolutely rocking.
Prediction: Seattle to win 20-17.
