Super Bowl 2014 predictions: Seattle versus Denver — The Seattle Seahawks face the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
I am picking the Seattle Seahawks to win Super Bowl XLVIII for many reasons. Here are some of the main ones:
Though fans are more easily impressed with great offenses than great defenses, history has shown that great defensive teams usually prevail in these matchups. Peyton Manning and the Denver Bronco offense set tons of records this year. But they didn’t face Seattle, who has the best defense in the NFL this season. This game pits the NFL’s best offense versus the NFL’s best defense. The safer bet is to take the defense.
Some examples of high-flying offenses that got derailed and lost in the Super Bowl were the 2007 New England Patriots, who were the highest scoring offense in history before this year’s Denver team and entered the Super Bowl with an 18-0 record, only to lose to the New York Giants. Other examples include the 2001 St. Louis Rams, the “Greatest Show on Turf”, who lost to New England in the Super Bowl, and the 2002 Oakland Raiders, who were blown out by a great defensive Tampa Bay team in the Super Bowl.
Denver played the second weakest schedule in the NFL this season, which made them look even better than they are. In the playoffs they only had to beat a 9-7 San Diego team and a New England team that was thoroughly decimated with injuries. Seattle plays in the stronger NFC, and in probably the toughest division in the league – the NFC West. Seattle played San Francisco three times this year. Denver hasn’t played anyone as good as the 49ers all season.
Seattle is a better all-around team, and is much healthier than Denver. The Seahawks are the healthiest they’ve been all year, while Denver has suffered a rash of injuries, especially on defense.
Seattle’s defense was created to stop an offense like Denver’s. They are the perfect defense to throw at the Broncos, and I don’t think Denver matches up well against Seattle at all.
Seattle’s dynamic Percy Harvin will play in this game, which is huge. In addition to receiving, he will likely return kickoffs – and Denver is one of the worst teams in the league in defending kickoffs.
These teams did meet in a preseason game this year. I normally wouldn’t pay much attention to a preseason game, but then I read that Peyton Manning took Denver’s preseason game against Seattle very seriously, approaching it like it was the Super Bowl. Peyton was pulled in the second quarter with Seattle ahead 27-7. Both teams played their first teams most of the first half, and Seattle went on to win 40-10.
Prediction: Seattle 24, Denver 20.
