Philippines: Manny Pacquiao political ally dies after shooting — George Perrett, a political ally of world boxing icon and Philippine legislator Manny Pacquiao, died on Saturday from a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment in a hospital for a gunshot wound to the thigh suffered in an ambush on Friday night, according to reports.
Perrett, who was mayor of the coastal town of Maitum in the southernmost tip of the Philippine islands, was shot by unknown gunmen while driving home with his wife and an aide, neither of whom were hurt in the attack.
Authorities said they do not know if the attack was politically motivated, and police have arrested no suspects.
Maitum has a violent political history in recent years, with two other sitting mayors having died in unsolved attacks by gunmen, according to reports.
Manny Pacquiao, a Philippine national boxing hero, has urged the police to bring the unknown suspects to justice.
“We are saddened by this very unfortunate incident. I urge our law enforces to expedite the investigation of the case and do everything to identify and arrest those responsible,” said Pacquiao to reporters.
Maitum mayor George Yabes was shot dead in the town in 2006, and then his successor Felix Reganit was gunned down in the Philippine capital of Manila later that same year, said reports.
Exuperio Gaabucayan, a former Maitum mayor, was also ambushed and killed in the town in 1990, said police.
