Last updated on April 12, 2017 | By Madilyn Rosales | April 12, 2017 | 249 views

UPDATE: Thirty four Earthquakes hit Philippines in less than twenty four hours in different locations.

From magnitude 4.0 up to magnitude 6.0 registered seismic activity on PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE OF VOLCANOLOGY AND SEISMOLOGY (PHIVOLCS) Earthquake Intensity Scale report. Seven were moderately strong and one was considered strong.

At least twenty five seismic events had occurred in Mindanao – Earthquakes hit Philippines most cases were tectonic in origin, according to PHIVOLCS official website.

The tremors were felt in separate region, seven were considered moderately strong according to PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale. The agency operates and maintains a network of 93 seismic stations spread across the Philippines.

Magnitude 4.0, felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration was felt like a passing of heavy cargo truck. Up to 5.8 magnitudes registered scale, data posted on quake monitoring agency.

A strong earthquake with magnitude of 6.0 in which epicenter was located 07.71°N, 124.66°E – 013 km N 56° W of Wao Lanao Del Sur Strong, Mindanao Island, at 05:20:58 AM – the strong earthquake was felt by most people indoors and outdoors. Many sleeping people were awakened. Some were frightened, Strong shaking and rocking felt throughout building.

Most cases were tectonic of origin, though, no fatalities and severe damage been reported but is expecting an after-shocks or small to moderate magnitude earthquake events which can still occur in the following days to weeks, PHIVOLCS official site stated.

Tectonic source of large-magnitude earthquakes hit Philippines

Tremors were caused mostly by rupture of geological faults. The country has 1,200-km-long Philippine fault zone (PFZ) is a major tectonic feature that transects the whole Philippine archipelago from northwestern Luzon to southeastern Mindanao. Since 2003, Kyoto University and PHIVOLCS-DOST have been mapping the Philippine Fault.

At present, approximately 90% of on-land-stretch of the PFZ has been mapped. On-going studies are now being done in Guinayangan, Infanta and the rest of Eastern Mindanao while detailed investigation will be conducted in Leyte and Masbate Islands in the future.

The data from the seismic stations are used to determine the locations of earthquakes, as well as the characteristics of the earthquakes generated. We also have a volcano monitoring network in and around Taal that could record seismic activity. Earthquakes hit Philippines/ IMAGE
