Occasionally I come across someone who always seems to think that everyone is lying, or is phony, or has some kind of ulterior motive.
Vicious criticism usually comes from these people’s mouths, especially directed toward anyone that seems genuine.
I once read a forum post of someone criticizing Eckhart Tolle in this manner. On and on and on, this person railed, blah, blah, blah.. (I’m sorry, but anyone who can’t tell that Tolle is genuine has some serious problems. You’re either an unbelievably bad judge of character, or a complete phony yourself).
Well, it’s clear to me what’s going on here. Some people are shallow and phony themselves, and they mistakenly assume that everyone else is just like them. Such people are living life at a low level and don’t realize that not everyone else is down there with them. They cannot believe that some people are actually real and genuine, because they certainly know they aren’t themselves.
So when people criticize someone who is clearly real and genuine, they may as well put a huge sign around their own neck that reads “I’m an incredibly shallow and phony person. Don’t believe anything I say.”
Of course, one reason so many people are indeed phony today is because we live in a society where we’re constantly bombarded with phoniness. Just look around, it’s everywhere. And people have come to accept that as “normal”. Well, I’m sorry, it may be “normal” in our boring, mundane, pretentious, money-worshipping, dumb, about-nothing society, but it’s certainly not how I’m going to live.
I’ve actually met people who believe that everyone is motivated solely by money. Well, guess what? Not everyone has fallen for such obvious nonsense, and not everyone kneels at the altar of the Almighty Dollar. And if you can’t see how foolish, shallow, and meaningless that is, I hardly know what to say to you.
I think many people have reduced life to such a boring and empty level, and are so out of touch with anything that’s real, deep, or inspiring, that they actually believe the stupid propaganda they’re fed on a daily basis from a society that’s lost its heart and soul. They’ve become little more than brainwashed robots, and have no idea that life can be so very different. Images/Google Images
