Video Thailand policeman hero injured: A Thai policeman is being hailed as a hero and has become an overnight social media star when a video clip of him in action Tuesday at an anti-government protest site went viral.
The footage shows Pol Sen Sgt Maj Theeradet Lekphoo as Thailand policeman hero, trying to protect his colleagues by kicking away a hand grenade thrown at riot police at the Phan Fah Bridge rally site. He was badly wounded when the grenade exploded.
He is being treated for serious injuries to both legs and was scheduled to have an operation Wednesday afternoon.
Police officers are praising his heroic attempts to protect his colleagues. National police chief Adul Saengsingkaew also praised his bravery.
Riot police responsible for reclaiming anti-government rally sites have issued a statement denouncing the government’s Centre for Maintaining of Peace and Order (CMPO) for insisting they refrain from using weapons or force despite some protesters being armed, according to reports.
The statement said that police are losing morale due to the number of deaths and injuries sustained by officers in operations in recent months, according to Thai media.
There has been widespread posting and sharing of the Royal Thai Police Office statement on social media.
“It is obvious that protesters in the name of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and other networks have guns and powerful war weapons.”
The statement called for riot police to be equipped with weapons such as rifles, shotguns, and M79 grenade launchers.
The statement said police throughout the country have become exhausted, saying the government is using the police for more than they are paid for.
Police also said they will investigate video footage released by foreign media that apparently shows Thai police firing bullets at protesters, as the national police chief denied officers had used such a weapon.
