Philippines beauty Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was declared Miss Universe 2015 after the ceremony’s host made a big mistake by mixing up the names of the winners in Las Vegas.
Miss Universe host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the first runner-up, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner of the pageant. After Gutierrez was crowned, Harvey returned to apologize that he had read the results incorrectly and that Philippines’ bet Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was the real winner.
Harvey admitted he made a mistake and confirmed that the “Pearl of the Orient Seas” won the pageant and Colombia as the runner-up followed by Olivia Jordan from the United States – evening showing the cue card to the cameras.
“I take the responsibility. It was my mistake… Please don’t hold it against the ladies,” said Steve Harvey, an American comedian and television host.
After the aforementioned slip, Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega removed the crown from the Colombian beauty queen Gutierrez on stage and it was transferred to Wurtzbach to officially crown the Stuttgart-native as Miss Universe 2015.
Everyone was in the state of shock at the event including Wurtzbach after receiving the crown at an annual international beauty pageant. Pia Wurtzbach became the third filipina to be crowned as Miss Universe and she has won the Binibining Pilipinas 2015 national pageant representing Cagayan de Oro.
After the gala, the host took to twitter to apologize for his blunder to the viewers across the globe and admitted it was solely his own error. In addition, he praised the pageant and the wonderful contestants. The 58-year-old American actor has received major backlash on the social media-networking website.
Earlier in the contest, participants from the Philippines, Colombia and the United States made it to the top three after beating 80 entrants in rounds like national costume, swimsuit and evening wear. The recent incident was the worst mistake in TV awards show history. IMAGE/AFP
