Roger Federer thrashed Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinal of the US Open at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday.
The Swiss international registered a comprehensive victory over his opponent and showed his master class on the court. Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Federer did not face a single break point as he prevailed in just 87 minutes.
The favorite was in control from start to finish as he fired 50 winners and he was successful 82 percent of the time he approached the net. In contrast, the 12th seeded Gasquet could produce only eight winners. The 34-year-old has won five consecutive titles at the US Open from 2004-08, then lost in the 2009 final. Basel native is just one-step away for his first final at Flushing Meadows in six years.
The five-time US Open champion advanced to the last four in New York for the 10th time in 12 years. Federer eyeing to win his 18th major title and the athlete hasn’t dropped a set in this tournament so far. On Friday, he will face Swiss Olympic and Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka.
“No doubt about it: I think I played a very good match. I felt the ball great,” said Federer. “I couldn’t be happier to play with him [Stan] here, to be quite honest. Two Swiss in the semis of the US Open, it’s very cool for both of us.”
In another quarterfinal, world number five Wawrinka overcame 19th seeded Kevin Anderson to advance to the next stage in straight sets. Wawrinka had lost four straight meetings to the South African, but this time Anderson failed to trouble the Swiss international.
