Singapore SEA Games 2015 preparations underway

Singapore SEA Games 2015 preparations underway: Singapore will host the next Southeast Asian Games in 2015, and organizers have already entered a detailed phase of preparations, said Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.

The 28th edition of the SEA Games, the region’s biggest sporting event, is scheduled to begin in just 18 months, and in mid-February next year organizers will begin to announce details of the event. At that time, information regarding the Games logo, theme, and mascot will be released.

Mr. Wong said some 15,000 volunteers will be recruited for the upcoming event.

He said visiting delegations will be housed in hotels in the city, rather than a traditional Games village.

He also said Singaporeans can learn from the Myanmar hosts of this year’s event, in the way the people of Myanmar embraced and took ownership of the Games.

Mr. Wong said: “For us, if we can have a (SEA) Games where all of Singapore comes together to cheer our athletes to support the Games, to be gracious hosts and to see the celebration of sports in Singapore in 2015, then I am confident that we will truly have a successful SEA Games.”

Mr. Wong was on hand to watch Team Singapore in action in Myanmar.

He said he believes the overall medal tally achieved by Team Singapore was good considering the smaller size of the contingent when compared to previous SEA Games, and he was impressed by the surprisingly strong showing the team made, and medals won, in sports that Singapore is not traditionally strong in, said a Channel News Asia report.

He said this is a good sign for the upcoming 2015 edition of the Games.

Team Singapore finished the 2013 Games with 34 gold medals, 29 silver, and 45 bronze, good enough for sixth place among the 11 competing countries.
