UPDATED NASA: Voyager 1 Current Position, Distance from Earth 19,614,374,199 KM, continuing on its more-than-37-year journey since 1977.
Data Command Transmission & Verification Operations shows from Voyager 1 Current Position, its Mission Operations Status Report # 2015-01-16, Week Ending January 16, 2015.
“There were no command operations in support of Voyager 1 during the period.”
Current Location: Voyager 1 is in “Interstellar space” and Voyager 2 is currently in the “Heliosheath” — the outermost layer of the heliosphere where the solar wind is slowed by the pressure of interstellar gas.
Refere to the chart of Voyager 1 & 2 mission: Real-time odometer of Voyager 1’s distance from the Earth and the Sun in astronomical units (AU) and kilometers (km).
Note: Because Earth moves around the sun faster than Voyager 1 is traveling from Earth, the distance between Earth and the spacecraft actually decreases at certain times of the year.
Voyager 1 Current Position until 2015
The primary mission ended on November 20, 1980, after Voyager passed through the Jovian system in 1979 and the Saturnian system in 1980. It was the first probe to provide detailed images of the two planets and their moons. It also studied the weather, magnetic fields, and rings of those planets and used their gravity to gain speed.
NASA Voyager 1 Current Position reaches far, as part of the Voyager program, like its sister craft Voyager 2, the spacecraft is in an extended mission to locate and study the regions and boundaries of the outer heliosphere, and to begin exploring the interstellar medium. Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space on August 25, 2012, making it the first spacecraft to do so.
The perilous journey of Voyager 1 current position. Two years later, Voyager 1 began experiencing a third “tsunami wave” of coronal mass ejections from the Sun, that has continued to at least December 15, 2014, further confirming that the probe is indeed in interstellar space.
