UPDATED: Bra-wearing activists in Hong Kong protest– Hundreds of men and women protested after a woman sentenced for assaulting a police officer with her breast.
- The demonstrators dressed in bras took to the streets in an effort to show to the public that breasts are not weapons.
Ng Lai-ying, 30, accused Chief Inspector Chan Ka-po of touching her breast during a chaotic protest against mainland Chinese cross-border traders in March.
However, the magistrate gave the verdict against her, saying the she intentionally pushed her breast against him so she could accuse the officer of malicious act. Ms. Lai-ying was sentenced for three months and 15 days in prison at a court hearing on July 30.
The verdict caused outrage among the social media users in Hong Kong and they started sharing pictures of their own weapons (breasts) to express their anger. More than 200 activists turned up after the web users campaign for the breast walk outside the police headquarters in the Wan Chai district.
Hong Kong protest, some of them were waving bras in the air and others wore the lingerie over their shirts while chanting that a “breast is not a weapon”. The protesters said the ruling was “ridiculous”. A topless male activist wearing a bra told the audience, “We better watch out as one day police might accuse us of attacking with our penis or buttock.”
A retired teacher James Hon said, “It’s his first time to wear a bra in my entire life. We have come this rather odd method to tell the world how ridiculous it is,” he added. Ng Cheuk-ling an activist said, “The ruling is absurd. The police must review their guidelines to handle female protesters.”
