Leicester City claimed the top spot in the Premier League after the Foxes defeated Chelsea 2-1 at King Power Stadium on Monday.

The home side went ahead after half an hour mark when Jamie Vardy scored 15th goal of the season. Chelsea players were disappointed after being 1-0 down and they looked lethargic in the field. The management staff of the Blues including the head coach at the sidelines appeared upset as the opponents opened the scoring.

Just three minutes after the interval, the hosts doubled their lead when Riyad Mahrez turned the defender left and right, before curling the ball into the far corner. Less than 15 minutes before time, Chelsea substitute Loic Remy pulled one back but the visitors were denied an equalizer in the remaining moments of the encounter.

The England striker Vardy, who scored or assisted in 14 consecutive league games, has been vital to Leicester’s rise to top during this year’s campaign. In addition, right winger Mahrez enjoying impressive and successful season so far. The Algerian international Mahrez has been involved in a league-high 18 goals this season including 11 goals and 7 assists.

Both teams were forced to make early changes, with Danny Drinkwater and Eden Hazard picking up injuries after innocuous challenges. As soon as the hosts took the lead, the chants of “we are top of the league” rang around the King Power Stadium.

Claudio Ranieri’s team survived barge of attacks to move back ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the table. On the contrary, the reigning Premier League champions sit just one point off the relegation zone in the 16th place.

The Blues have now lost nine of their opening 16 league fixtures while Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is fighting for survival. The Portuguese expressed anger and disappointment at his side’s performance. IMAGE/AFP
