World’s first robotic Kidney Transplant through vagina

A life-extending procedure, the first ever operation using robotics through vagina.

Kidney transplant is performed usually by surgeons in order to extend lives of certain person. This mainly refers to the organ transplant of a kidney into a patient, having end-stage renal disease. Usually characterized as genetically related or non-related transplant. This depends on a biological relationship between the donor and the recipients capability.

Recently, an operation of kidney transplant was performed using robotics. This was the first ever robotics to perform such operation, actually a successful one into sisters. On July 9, a 44 year-old Valerie Perez gave one of her kidneys to Beatrice Perez, her 43-year old sister. The kidney was both removed and then transplanted through the vagina, Wednesday.

Lead surgeon Frederico Sallustro stated, “The two sisters are doing well,”I have been dreaming of doing this operation for the last three years,”The procedure, at the University Hospital Centre in Toulouse, was completed “in a single go, exclusively with robots,” assisted the operation by medical robotics expert Nicolas Doumerc.

Certain operation undergone a medical check up for the capability of donors. People with mental illness or significant on-going substance abuse issues may be excluded. Major problem to organ transplantation between genetically non-identical patients lay in the recipient’s immune system. This would treat a transplanted kidney as a “non-self” and immediately or chronically reject it.

A healthy kidney was removed through the donor’s vagina recorded in 2009 at Johns Hopkins Medical Center with first donor chosen as she had previously had a hysterectomy. Vaginal donations promise to speed recovery and reduce scarring. After kidney transplant, problem may encounter such as post operative complication, bleeding, infection, vascular thrombosis and urinary complications. The patient’s age and health condition before transplantation affect the risk of complications. IMAGE/AFP
