The annual festival in the city of Davao, went very successful yet a peaceful celebration.
Kadayawan Festival 2015 in Davao City, Philippines marks the 30th Kadayawan celebration from August 17 to 23. It honors artistic, cultural and historical heritage, past personified by the ancestral Lumad people in the city. Festival held every third week of August, is a celebration of life, thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, bounty harvest, serenity of living and wealth culture.
It was once called “Apo Duwaling” and renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” in 1988 by City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, in celebration of bountiful harvest of Davao’s flowers, fruits and other produce as well as the wealth of the city’s cultures and celebrated up to this day.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte insured a peaceful festival, stated, Kadayawan was “a celebration for all but is most especially dedicated to the Indigenous Peoples and Muslims in the city.” He issued executive order, creating committee which will organize, plan and implement activities in connection of Kadayawan Festival 2015.
To maintain peace and order, policemen were placed all around the city. Chief Inspector Milgrace Driz, Davao City Police Office spokesperson said, “We are thankful for the cooperation of the public in terms of the city ordinances that we are implementing like the liquor ban, speed limit, and the anti-smoking ban,” “We are looking to use motorcycle for our police personnel for a faster response in reported incidents especially in big events like Araw ng Daaw and Kadayawan.”
The Kadayawan Festival 2015 went very successful, with thousands of people joined the celebration. In statement of Davao City Councilor Leo Avila III, “I believe Kadayawan, as a festival of thanksgiving, allows us to be grateful for our blessings as a people in a bountiful land.
