Manchester City held to goalless draw at Leicester

Manchester City could not close the gap on leaders Arsenal as they drew level at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

With this win, Leicester ended 2015 second to the Gunners on goal difference and ahead of the Citizens by three points. Manuel Pellegrini’s men came into the contest with a comprehensive victory over Sunderland on Boxing Day. On the contrary, Leicester City suffered their second league defeat of the season at Liverpool.

Manchester City once again lacked the power and energy to finish an away encounter as the visitors continued their winless away run. On 12th of September, the Citizens claimed last away Premier League victory at Crsytal Palace. It was expected to be a high-scoring clash as the two league title rivals faced each other in a mid-week fixture. Both the goalkeepers proved their worth in the respective sides as they managed to keep clean sheet.

The hosts’ intentions were clear as they pushed for an early breakthrough. Marc Albrighton failed to hook Christian Fuchs’ shot into the net after the Man City goalkeeper Joe Hart was out of the equation. Jamie Vardy, the leading goal-scorer, missed the best goal scoring opportunity when he shot over the crossbar after prevailing one-on-one battle.

Sergio Aguero came inches closer to put the travelling side ahead early in the second half but he was off target from inside the six-yard box. The Argentine striker Aguero appeared to be struggling for form as he was replaced by Wilfried Bony after an hour mark. The 27-year-old forward has been blunted by a succession of injuries that have interrupted his season.

“I think we did more than Leicester to win the game. We had more possession, more attempts, more options but it was a tough game against a tough team playing away. This is a crucial period. I think at the end of January we will know exactly what position we are in,” said Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Manchester City will travel to Watford on Saturday while Leicester will host Bournemouth, who has one defeat in last seven games. IMAGE/ESPN
