Rogers Cup – Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the final match of the tournament.

The Scottish professional tennis player ended an eight-match losing streak against the world number one Novak Djokovic as he lifted his 11th Masters title in Montreal. Murray had been winless against the Serb international for more than two years but he prevailed after 2 hours and 58 minutes. Previously he recorded a victory over Djokovic at the Wimbledon final in 2013.

The British number one needed five championship points in a tense final and claimed his fourth ATP Tour title of the year. It will be a huge boost for Murray before the US Open starts in New York on August 31. Djokovic had been playing to win his fourth Rogers Cup in his ninth final of the year.

Murray clinched the first set 6-4 but lost the second one as Djokovic was on a mission like a wounded animal. However, Murray bounced back in the third set to wrap up the game. Djokovic survived three championship points at 5-2, before Murray eventually claimed the final set 6-3.

Rogers Cup winner dedicated the victory to his coach Amelie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday. “I’m not sure she will have stayed up to watch this one but, Amelie, this one’s for you,” said Murray, who won his 35th career title. It was his first win on a hard court over the Wimbledon champion since the US open final in 2012.
