Mandalay, Myanmar — The Thai football women won the gold medal by beating Vietnam 2-1 in the finals of the SEA Games 2013 in Myanmar on Friday night.
It wasn’t easy though, as Thailand had to come from behind in the match to defeat the defending champion Vietnamese team at Mandalarthiri Stadium in Mandalay.
Vietnam scored first in the 33rd minute when striker Minh Nguyet connected off a loose ball bouncing back off the crossbar after Nguyen Thi Nga missed a long kick outside the box.
But just seven minutes later, Thailand got even when striker Seesraum scored after Vietnamese defender Nguyen Thi Nga cleared the ball into Seesraum.
Then, two minutes into the second half, took the lead 2-1 when Maijaren received the ball on the right wing and blasted it into the far corner of the frame as Vietnam goalkeeper Kieu Trinh tried to vain to block it.
It was third loss of the day for Vietnam’s football teams against Thailand at the games. Earlier on Friday, both of Vietnam’s men’s and women’s futsal teams lost in the final matches to the Thais, according to reports.
In the women’s football Bronze medal match played just prior to the final in the same stadium, hosts Myanmar got some consolation after their heartbreaking sudden-death penalty shootout loss to Thailand two days ago by beating Malaysia 6-0.
With about 20,000 of their fans turning out on a cold day in spite of their team being out of the final, Myanmar’s plethora of goals started in the 24th minute when Yee Yee Oo scored on a rebound off the crossbar.
Khin Moe Wai scored the second goal in the 39th minute, and Than Than Htwe scored on a beautiful 25-metre shot that dipped just over the Malaysian keeper Nur Izwani Azman.
Nur Izwani played well, keeping the score from being even worse than it was for much of the match, but 25 minutes into the second half, Myanmar got three more goals past her.
They were scored in the 70th minute by Yee Yee Oo, in the 82nd minute by San San Maw, and in the 90th minute by Myint Myint Aye.
