People who drink moderate amount of coffee in a day are less likely to die prematurely from an illness than those who do not drink or drink less coffee, according to a study.
Researchers utilized health data from 74,890 women in the Nurses’ Health Study and 93,054 from the Nurses’ Health Study plus 40,557 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. The dietary habits of the study subjects were collected using questionnaires every 4 years and the participants were followed up for a maximum of 30 years.
The investigators made sure to control for alcohol and tobacco consumption, as these were both relatively high in coffee drinkers, compared with non-coffee drinkers. The research team pointed out that their reliance on participants accurately reporting their own level of coffee consumption was a major drawback.
The study revealed that moderate coffee intake, lest than five cups a day, reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and suicide.
“Bioactive compounds in coffee reduce insulin resistance and systematic inflammation,” said Dr. Ming Ding, a lead author of the survey. “That might be responsible for the inverse association between coffee and mortality.”
The consequences of coffee intake are being discussed in recent years due to its wide use in our everyday lives. Contrary to the current study’s finding, coffee appeared to have negative impact on blood pressure and plasma homocysteine, both of which increase cardiovascular risk.
“Regular consumption of coffee can be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet. However, certain populations such as pregnant women and children should be cautious about high caffeine intake from coffee or other beverages,” said Dr. frank Hu, one of the study authors.
Coffee is a complex of chemicals including naturally occurring caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant. The most common use of caffeinated drink is to reduce physical fatigue and to prevent drowsiness. The stimulant ingredients present in coffee produce increased wakefulness, increased focus and better general body coordination. IMAGE/headlines-news.com
