The English new wave band Spandau Ballet, formed in London will perform live in Manila. The band arrived in Manila at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Sunday to have their one-night concert at the SM Mall of Asia, 21 September 2015 at 8 in the evening, Monday. This marks their first time concert as a group in the country, with Fra Lippo Lippi vocalist Per Sorensen as special guest. The group is inspired by and an integral part of the New Romantic movement.

Spandau Ballet is one of the most successful British musical acts of the 1980s with band’s classic line-up features brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitars, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble. They are known for their songs like ”Gold”, “Trues”, “I’ll Fly For You”. In three decades, they has sold 25 million records worldwide with 23 hit singles. The one-night concert is part of their world tour, “Soul Boys of the Western World,” in support of a 2014 documentary.

The band was formed in 1976 with original named as The Cut and changed its name to the The Makers in 1976. They became a power pop band and changed the name to Gentry in 1978 and played a few gigs. It was later changed to Spandau Ballet after DJ Robert Elm, a friend of the band, saw the phrase ‘Spandau Ballet’, scrawled on the wall of a nightclub lavatory during his visit to Berlin. The name refers to twitching of the corpses hanging on the barbed wire, repeatedly hit by Spandau machine gun fire from the German lines, expression used by Allied troops in the trenches in the First World War.

In March 1983, the band Spandau Ballet released their third album, True, which topped on chart. The album reached number one in the UK and later released their next single, “Gold” which reached number 2. In 1990, the band split up and had solo projects. They confirmed the rumors that they will be having reunited concert, at a press conference on 25 March 2009, the band announced their comeback tour.

In 1980, their debut single “To Cut a Long Story Short”, which reached No. 5 in the UK. It was the first of ten UK Top 10 hits, including a No. 1 single “True”, a No. 2 single “Gold”, and two No. 3 singles, “Chant No. 1” and “Only When You Leave”.
